Percy and Elissa are over half the novel, they are best friends and know almost everything about each other. Both of them were best friends with Willard before he commits suicide. They both deal with the loss differently but in the end are emotionally destroyed. Percy deals with his hurt for Willard leaving and his father by trying not to remember him. He insists and tells people that his father is dead. He was killed by tsetse flies, and that is the end of it. Elissa knew this whole tie that he was not dead but played along with it so that Percy could cope with his dad leaving. Elissa seems like she gives lots of hints to Percy that she wants to take their relationship to the next level. I know Percy feels the same way but is scared to actually get close and have someone in his life that he really cares about. Until Percy man’s up or Elissa makes the first step and actually tells him how she feels, it won’t go anywhere. Later in the book you see them starting to get close and Percy thinking about Elissa. They hold hands when the walk home, finally try and kiss each other in the bushes. Percy makes a comment on, "So this is what the female mammae feel like." Elissa freaks out and believes she is just another chapter in his stupid novel. They don't talk to each other at all at grad. In the epilogue she finally decides to forgive him and they decide to hang out after her trip.
A huge part in the novel is the way Percy copes with the deaths and or losses in his life. The other half of the book is basically about his father and Willard. Willard was one of Percy's best friends, but he commit suicide on the roof of the school. Percy has a very hard time dealing with the loss of his very close friend. Times where he goes by the door to lead you up to the roof, he has epiphanies. Percy's counsellor Mr. Verplaz helps him out a great deal throughout the book, "tribes". He deals with the loss of his father by pretending he is dead. His father has wrote and called to Percy for the last three years. Percy has not responded or mailed him back about anything. I believe Percy is very bitter that his parents are divorced and he had to move away like that. Percy does all sorts of things to make him feel like he is in a tribe like his dad. A good example is when he pierces his nipple in the bathroom stall. It is a symbol a pain for his father. In the end Percy's dad comes to his graduation, him a Percy patches things up. His dad decides to move back to Chicago so they can see each other more often.

coming soonMy thoughts are torn between the reasons why I like the novel study being done this way, and why i didn't. I liked it being done this way because it not only teaches you responsibility, but discipline. We had a whole class for a long time unsupervised; a lot of stuff could have been done other than the novel study. I believe it is a good exercise to push and prepare yourself for University. Lots of things in life you actually have to go out and do yourself, you don't have a teacher pushing you to finish. I really enjoyed the project I think it benefitted the people who actually did their work and got things done early. You had time to do other homework and really treat yourself instead of those people who started goofing off, then having to cram. I also love this assignment because of the group work, I love to socialize and really get a point of view from other members. If you read and discuss the questions you have together, it gives you a better understanding of the book. I personally have way more good things to say then bad. Which leads me to why I did not like this assignment.
The Reasons why I didn’t like the assignment are it was hard to stay on task, times you found yourself talking about things you shouldn’t be. Also the fact that you need to pick your group members wisely, it really does suck when you have members who are not prepared or do not show up. It ruins almost everything you had planned to do for that day. Also I believe at times even being determined as you are. It was hard to stay focused with the amount of freedom you had, especially for a student who struggles with comprehending by themselves.

    right up.
Some things I didn't like about the book is the way they had to go into the epilogue to explain what really happened between Percy and Elissa. Those are the two main characters of the book and they left them unanswered. As well as i would of changed the ending to Percy and Elissa going to grad together. Give the audience a sense of peace and something to thrive off of. It seemed like he went to grad and they didn't converse on word, just looked awkwardly at each other. I didn't like it and would of done changing to only that part. Also I believe that Percy's mother should have got a name. I believe that in any book every character should have a name especially a character like his mother.

coming soonThe things I like about the book, "Tribes, is that after the first five chapters it was very hard to put down the book. I believe that it was made in the high school time which all of us are in now, so it was very easy to connect and or relate to it. The romance between Elissa and Percy just made things way more interesting. They were the reason why lots of nights I was reading ahead. I also like how lots of things related to his supposedly dead dad. It made you feel a sense of pity and emotional attachment to Percy's character. The twist at the end was extremely unexpected and that's why I liked it. The whole time you believed he was dead and why were all the counsellors like Mr verplaz not getting where this boy is coming from? It all unravells in the end and really clears all the holes in the book right up.

coming soonMy character development is on Justin a member of the jock tribe. He is also a member of the football team and really likes to show it. He is a very broad guy and does not mind beating the odd guy up. Justin stands up for himself, his build and features help him out. He has a high forehead, thick skull, gray eyes and a big head. Throughout the novel he shows vast majorities of change for the better of the people.
At the start of Tribes Justin seems almost confused and hurts people to make himself feel better. Justin beat up Percy because he blurted out that he is a asshole. His smart remark was, "hey, Percy, what's Freak Girl like in the sack?" He seems to be really good at getting under people's skin and making them feel bad about themselves. Later on in the book we see Justin growing up. I believe he now realizes that there is more to life than what tribe you're in, or what friends you have. At graduation he actually states, "Bald is beautiful." This was a conversation starter on Percy's new haircut. Even though Percy was shocked at what a change he realized that everyone must grow up at some point, and realize what is really important. I beleive that in the book, "Tribes" Justin has the most dramatic change for the better.
